Activities for Students - Time of Day Tables

Welcome to the new Weather site on The Weather Wiz. It is hoped you will teach your youngsters the science of meteorology the correct way, whether they be 3rd Graders or seniors in High School.

The Secret of Success is Using Actual Weather Conditions of the Day.

The SECRET OF SUCCESS is using actual weather conditions of the day. (Radar, Satellite, Current Observations available free on the Internet.) and then having the youngsters actually make forecasts. They can do it and they love it! For example, if you click on radar and see a big “blob of snow” on the screen. It is 100 miles to the west of your area and moving east at 20 miles per hour. Even a 3rd grader could mark off the distance it traveled in one hour and then mark off the number of hours until it reaches your location. (You may have to assist them in the beginning) All of a sudden the youngsters will start yelling “It’s going to start snowing at 2:25 P.M.” Plenty of excitement! Now let’s see which youngster comes the closest. Involve the youngsters! Having all the weather data at your finger tips like the professionals do, as well as the short book I have included (Teachers Guide) you should be on your way to teach meteorology in a very exciting way. If you have questions as you go, contact me through theweatherwiz.com. Now start investigating the sites and have some fun.

First, download the time of day. This is probably the most complicated part of the program for the youngsters. In the beginning, why have them understand it. Let’s just have them look up the proper time. (***COPY THIS AND POST IT ON THE WALL OR PUT IT INTO A NOTEBOOK!).

****If you are in the Eastern Time Zone, see what time is written on the map or the chart you are looking at. For example, if the chart indicates it is 12Z that means it is 12 o’clock noon in Greenwich, England. All time is based on Greenwich, England time, which is zero degrees longitude. The earth spins on its axis 360 degrees (one complete turn) in 24 hours. (One day) 360 degrees divided by 24 hours = 15 degrees per hour. One hour equals 15 degrees. If it is 12 o’clock noon in England (12Z), N.Y.C., which is located at 75 degrees West of Greenwich, England, is five hours earlier than England. (75 degrees divided by 15 degrees = 5 hours). So, 12Z in England is equal to 7 AM in NY. Look at the chart above. In the extreme left column, in the “Z”Time Zone, look for 12Z. In the next column to the right, see what time it is in the Eastern Time zone. Correct, it is 7 AM. If we are on Eastern daylight saving time, look to the next column to the right. Correct, since we push the clock ahead for daylight savings time, 12Z would equal 8 AM. (7 AM + one hour).

Since we use a 24 hour clock, what time is it if it is 19z? Well, we must subtract 5 hours for 19z leaving us with 14 o.clock eastern standard time. What time is 14 o’clock? You must subtract 12 from any time over 12. For example: 14 minus 12 equals 2. Since it is greater than 12, the time will be expressed in p.m. Therefore, 14 0’clock is 2 pm. 18 o’clock would be 6 pm. (18-12=6)
